My roommate once told a story about how advertising saved his life.
He was swimming in California. His friends and him decided to do some cliff jumping. While up there, they saw an advertising billboard. It said, "Look before you leap." It was advertising some kind of financial company. But they took it to heart and checked out the cliff from below. They saw a branch sticking out where they would have dropped.
Advertising dishes out information to the mass public. Because of this, people really should do their homework before readily accepting the ideas promoted as truth. Ads just want to sell. Think about how much of an education advertisements can be. But maybe ads do do more for us, like in the story above.
